reposted fan poetry: Nerima Haiku Collection, or, 22 Takes On The Rain (Ranma 1/2)

A talk about haiku on Plurk today with [profile] night_mare_chan led me to remember the first bit of written fanwork I ever posted online, a collection of rain-themed haiku as if written by characters in Ranma 1/2. Not just from the perspective of, but stuff I thought they might actually commit to paper.

I still like the old thing, even if I now think I took it a bit too seriously and some more direct humour could have been all to the good.

I'm reposting it here mainly so I can have something to put on the old master list!

Title: Nerima Haiku Collection, or, 22 Takes On The Rain
Canon: Ranma 1/2
Characters: Most of the main cast take part except Kodachi, Kuno, Nodoka
Pairings: None (has Mousse ->Shampoo)
Rating: G

Disclaimer: The characters and situations of Ranma 1/2 are created and owned by Rumiko Takahashi. They are used here without permission for entertainment purposes only. Not to be used for profit under any circumstance. Should not be reposted elsewhere without the writer's approval.

1. Murmur of the rain:
I would prefer to hear it
From inside the house.
(Ukyo)

2. The tiny pig squeals,
Two meters from its mother,
In the pouring rain.
(Akari)

[note: not Ryoga, just an ordinary piglet from their farm!]

3. Going home from market,
I hold it over my wife;
The small umbrella.
(Genma)

4. The raindrops sound harsh
Underneath my umbrella.
I will not let go.
(Ryoga)

5. If only the rain
Wouldn't come so damn sudden!
Then I could stand it.
(Ranma)

6. Some people are wise,
And they carry umbrellas.
But others get soaked.
(Akane)

7. The rain's rattling down —
My love, should I get out there
And bring you cover?
(Mousse)

8. Rain no beat Shampoo!
Under tarpaulin, I ride
On bike, everywhere!
(Shampoo)

9. To the parched earth,
The rain that falls is really
The Water of Life.
(Akane)

10. A duck flaps its wings,
And the bike topples over:
It rains where I live.
(Ranma)

11. Ah! To have a home
With strong walls, full of people,
While the rain whips down!
(Soun)

12. The kids are laughing,
And splashing in their raincoats.
So I cross the street.
(Ryoga)

13. The gentle spring rain
With its melancholy feel,
Brings customers in!
(Ukyo)

14. Rain on my glasses—
The world around me dissolves,
And I do the same.
(Mousse)

15. No use complaining—
But after eight days of rain,
I sigh for my shoes.
(Nabiki)

16. The martial artist,
As one with his surroundings,
Smells the wet bamboo.
(Genma)

17. It's all that I hear,
Underneath my umbrella:
The sound of the rain.
(Ryoga )

18. Kicking off her shoes,
She leaps into the spring rain—
That girl's poor mother!
(Kasumi)

19. The spring rain falls down,
it tears and tugs at my heart.
But I have to cook.
(Ukyo)

20. As long as it falls
On someone else, and not me —
I'm happy with it.
(Ranma - after being urged to
find something good with the rain)

21. In soft summer rain,
I am walking happily,
Sneezing happily.
(Akane)

Bonus I:

After completing her one haiku, Shampoo gets tired of the whole genre. Instead, she goes off and writes a twelve-line poem in Chinese on the same subject.

The rain falls often
in my home country.
It falls on the roofs,
it falls in the orchards.

It drenches the fields,
and floods the high roads,
and falls on the springs
in the Valley of Sorrow.

A land full of dangers,
I think of it often.
The rain here is different,
But also the same.

Bonus II:

And suddenly, there was another haiku, one that had nothing to do with rain:

Is that Mount Fuji
Or a different mountain
That looks just the same?

(Ryoga - most probably)
