Reposting two commentfics I did for this thread over at Dreamwidth (found via [livejournal.com profile] anenko. The first one was first posted anonymously and has been extended from 105 words to 176. One is for Ranma 1/2, the other a Ranma/Fruits Basket crossover.

On the first one: I usually just friendship Akane and Ukyo - I find it tough to split up Ranma and Akane, for one - but I still wanted to try the prompt. Still very vague on what on earth has happened with Ranma, though! (I also still want to use a similar set-up for a longer Akane + Ukyo friendship/Akane levels up in martial arts fic, one day.)

On the second: this prompt seemed like a cool idea, sticking those two together. But I had to respect that the power levels are so different in the two series and that one of them must take place at least a few years after the other. It would have been neat to work in a reference to their curses, but alas, it didn't really fit here.

As always, nitpicks etc are more than welcome!

Akane grabbed her staff and turned to face her new opponent, an arrogant newcomer she'd never fought before. Ukyo grinned – no need for her to step in, even if the guy seemed powerful enough: she felt quite certain he would have stomped Akane a year ago. Things were different now.

"If you're really Anything Goes, you need to be more flexible," Ukyo had said once, early on when she'd started to help Akane train (for her own secret reasons, back then she'd still been hopefully spinning schemes to help her fairy tale dream come true). Those words had come back to haunt her, later, with cruel irony when Ukyo found she was not so very flexible herself.

Akane had taken the advice to heart and grown, though. And in the end after so much pain and heartache, when everything was over Akane turned out to be the one thing Ukyo simply couldn't bear to lose.

She watched the fight, her heart aching with pride. This is the one person whose truth I can always rely on.

Kyo struggled up to rest on his elbows on the ground, nose bleeding. "D-damn," he panted. "So much for g-getting stronger."

Ryoga dusted off his clothes and sat down on the grass in the small clearing. "Well. I'm stronger too," he said matter-of-factly.

This was the third time they'd met. Kyo regarded Ryoga as a real weirdo, with a worse sense of direction than Hatsuharu and even less common sense. Like the other two times, he claimed he had ust randomly stumbled onto the Sohma grounds while trying to get somewhere else entirely. But he was an extremely strong fighter, and tough enough that you didn't have to hold anything back no matter how foul mood you were in. There was no way Kyo would pass up the chance for a spar.

"Heh." Kyo sat up and cracked his shoulder. He managed a wry smile free of resentment. "And here I thought if I could make you angry, I'd at least get a hit in." The smile dropped away. "Master always tells me people fight worse when they're angry," he mumbled, "and that's why I always lose against that damn rat, but..." He clenched his aching hands into fists. "I can't help it," he muttered fiercely. "I just hate that smug bastard so much."

Ryoga hummed thoughtfully, pouring tea from a thermos into two cups. He handed Kyo one. "Sometimes I do get sloppy when I get mad," he admitted, "but sometimes I just get better. Depends." He shrugged. "But... I did find out one thing," he said in a lower voice, looking down at the forest ground.

"Yeah? What's that?" said Kyo, sipping carefully from the hot tea.

Ryoga turned his gaze to the sky and went on quietly, "That... if you want to win against someone you really hate, because you really hate them, but if you have to choose you'd rather keep hating them than winning... then you're not going to win." He drank from his tea, birds chirping around them. "That's what I think."
