vriddy: K-9 Volume 1 Cover (k-9)
[personal profile] vriddy posting in [community profile] anime_manga
I've fallen in love with this manga and am continually surprised at how few people seem to have heard of it, so here's my humble attempt to spread the word :D (This is a cross-post from my journal, where I'm also delighted to discuss this fandom anytime :D :D)

It only took one promo picture to get me to check it out:

A man with fluffy hair with bloodied face holding the cheek of a smoking woman with a bloodied face, text in English

...I didn't really ask any more questions after that. Bonus impact for stumbling on it in Japanese because the "kept pet" implied in the verb is lovely, and obviously plays with the K-9/"police dog" title.

Anyway, meet Oboro on the left - he's great - and Ren on the right - she's great. The art is beautiful, and everyone is very pretty.

About the world

Some people have special abilities, most of which are not well understood. Only one thing is known for sure: these abilities manifest after someone commits a crime. For example, the criminal from the first chapter is an arsonist and can control/become fire. (Somewhat unrelated, but this is pretty fun coming in from the Boku No Hero Academia world, because it's like a universe in which only bad guys get a quirk.) Here, these abilities are called "sins." In the Japanese, it's simply the kanji for crime with "sin" written in katakana beside it.

This seems pretty simplistic at first glance, but that slowly changes as we drill deeper into the worldbuilding and learn the nuances of these abilities and how they manifest. The implications are deeply fucked up, with often devastating consequences that I'm totally here for as my heart gets shattered again and again.

The story premise

Our plucky detective Ren is selected to join Division 9, a newly created division that pairs a detective with a sin user in order to fight fire with fire -- what could possibly go wrong?! I love her. She kicks so much ass.

Woman with a leg up kicking some dude in the face mid-stride

So, who's our main cast?

Short character profiles )

Four characters looking way too cool as they step through a broken wall

TOGETHER THEY FIGHT CRIME! More specifically, crime related to sin users. But they also get their asses kicked and handed over to them quite a bit, haha.

A bit more on the story and on them )

Where to read? How many chapters are out?

37 chapters, 3 volumes. Totally possible to catch up in a reasonable amount of time! )

Back at the beginning of the month, I decided for (Actual-not-Accidental) Advent to read something with 24 volumes... and I came up with Hikaru no Go, which has 23. But then I realized Whistle! has 24 and I can probably read and let go of that... While I started Whistle!... I have instead stuck with HikaGo. (Whoops?) And while my first time through HikaGo to completion was only a couple of years ago, I feel kind of different about it? Certain things really are telegraphed quite well and it's very clear the series ends with vol. 17, which is a little awkward considering it's a 23 volume series. (vol. 18 gets a pass as it's bonus/short stories) I feel like 19-23 is trying to set up something that just isn't strong enough to keep going, and while it should have ended sooner, ending where it did is fine.

I'll keep working my way through Whistle! as well. I know I haven't read it since I moved, and all I really remember is "soccer manga".

I'm also watching Gundam Wing, in earnest, in order to watch Endless Waltz on Xmas. It probably won't come as a surprise if I say the pacing is a bit different than I remember through the first bits. Somewhere between or after Whistle!, I should probably do all the Wing manga but especially Glory.

I need to get to the main library to pick up a 3D print. IDK if I mentioned my last one, but I fully intend to take advantage of this print-on-demand service. (x amount free, very cheap after) Aside from various Gundam add-ons and conversions, there are people just making original model kits and putting them out there for free. Amazing.

(You wouldn't download a Gundam?! Yeah it turns out we all would, I think. Someone made the conversion piece I've always wanted and holy shit, yeah. Yeah.)

The month has certainly gotten away from me- what do you mean Christmas is in a few days?

Thank you to everyone who has sent cards! I have, embarrassingly, completely lost track of things. ^^;; But I have also sent a lot of things... and would feel good about the state of my gifting overall except I have one amazon order from the beginning of the month that hasn't budged!. I suspect next year I will either need to pester people for wishlists at the beginning of November or see if we can skip the 'zon altogether. (Also a few packages out in the void but that's starting to clear up and that's certainly the weather affecting things at this point.)

I have one more day of work left this year, and then nearly two weeks off. I suppose the main thing I need to do is clean/sort/organize. Yet again, not having any clue what I own threatened to bite me in the ass. (Saved! ...by my laziness. I hadn't actually bought the thing I thought I needed but already had.) So, 2026 will be the year of the whole-place inventory and likely clean-out. Maybe I can just start doing a monthly giveaway post?

Finished up RG Exia and put him in the Mangar. Next is a 30MM Horse, which is part of the D&D party that I ordered at Thanksgiving: RG Justice, HG Calibarn, SD Dynames, 30MF Priest, and 30MM Horse. I didn't order a D&D party on purpose! Just... once everyone was in my cart I was just 'lol, this sure is an assortment, or more like a D&D party...'

Neighbor D's memorial service is also today. It's fairly late in the day, so I'm just going to drop by briefly, but I also wouldn't miss it.

Of the many pre-Christmas stressful things this year, an unexpected one is [community profile] ficinabox. And I didn't even participate this year! But I usually try to read and comment widely before creator reveals and this year the timing was not great for me.

I did find many fanworks to enjoy and loved many of them, and here are some of my favorites. Several of them can be enjoyed fandom-blind.

This Ao3 Author's Curse Has Got Hands by [archiveofourown.org profile] antimony_medusa
Dream SMP, 5.6k, Phil & Techno, urban fantasy AU, A/N format
Summary: Fanfic author Technoblade has been pre-writing and is excited to start posting his whumptober longfic, his trusty beta Philza at his side. Unfortunately for his posting schedule, the Ao3 author's curse hits him hard, fast, and with an intensity never before seen. Really it's starting to seem like he's cursed.
Does this mean that he gives up posting his fic?
Nah nah nah nah nah he's got this handled. Don't even worry about it. Chapters will be posted come hell, high water, hospital visit, house invasions, eviction, mob action, emergency road trip, or kidnapping. Technoblade never dies, and he never misses an update.
Why I love it: A story told entirely in author's notes: the format works fantastic, the character voice is impeccable, and most importantly it's hilarious.
Canon knowledge required: Definitely not (tested on my gf.)

I have an e-book-reader with many many unread books on it. But when I'm e.g. on the underground, taking out and turning on my e-reader would be an extra step, and it's easier to read things on my phone. Which used to be fic, but now I also have the library app on my phone so I can read books I'm currently borrowing from the library. Convenient, but a side-effect is that which books I read next is more often determined by which books I finally got from my wait lists. And sometimes it is almost stressful when I get several at the same time ^^
But they were good books :)

Taking a brief break from building RG Exia to catch up on other things and eat... And I was randomly reminded of a community that I saw advertised the other day. No check-ins, except for needing to fill out a form for every single post. No exclusions except for this stuff that actually excludes a lot of people (and is overly vague)... All these formats allowed, except actually works have to be transformative. (I suspect the mods literally don't know what they're saying there?) Anyway, the initial hook was a good one and perhaps I'll steal it as it's certainly not nailed down.

RG Exia is an interesting build so far. Unlike any kit I have built, ever, the starting point is the legs. But this is also my first RG so perhaps it's a line-specific thing?

I realized earlier that I haven't heard my upstairs neighbor in at least a few days. I can't remember the last time I saw his car, either, so I guess he's headed somewhere warmer for the season. He always used to, and then stopped at one point, and now I can't remember what he's done for the last few years. ^^;;

Combination hangar and manger, the Mangar is a silver manger with colorful LED lights and model Acerby decorating a little Christmas tree while model 00 Gundam attempts to untangle some garland.

I'm working on The Mangar again this year. I've finally got it (mostly) de-mossed and painted, and mounted the first set of little LED lights I found. There is a ways to go, but that's fine.

What an incredibly busy week! The year end slide is absolutely in full force. But I have gotten things ordered, gotten things sent, etc.

Yesterday was a day of shoveling the 'rents out a bit, mailing packages, ordering a holiday pie, and picking up my first 3D printed request from the library. It will need some trimming (okay a lot of trimming!) before I even know if it'll work, but it's a conversion head for an HG GINN, to make it into Elijah's GINN. I did in fact tell boycritter that we needed to run to the bookie joint so I could get a little head. It was also their book sale weekend and I ended up with a couple of books, a few CDs, and a half-sized binder of clear-pages that will work great for model decal storage.

The weather was awful midweek. Just absolute snowpocalypse for a couple of days, and the worst was that it warmed up and then the temperature dropped like a rock, so everything is now frozen hell. It's supposed to warm up again next week but idk how much that'll help. I think I burned a lot of my ability to can just driving from place to place. (Also did some untoward things to my shoulders while working under the dash of an old Mustang.)

Really the only interesting thing from my week was a small brightly colored tank, lol. I did have a couple more of my Black Friday purchases finally roll in and I think I've officially crossed the space-to-store-stuff rubicon. ^^; Time to get building.

Also time to catch up on my inbox.

After a wet-bulb heat wave kills thousands in India, the UN forms an organization, the Ministry for the Future, intended to deal with climate change on behalf of future generations. They're not the only organization trying mitigate or fight or adapt to climate change; many other people and groups are working on the same thing, using everything from science to financial incentives to persuasion to terrorism.

We very loosely follow two very lightly sketched-in characters, an Irish woman who leads the Ministry for the Future and an American man whose life is derailed when he's a city's sole survivor of the Indian wet-bulb event, but the book has a very broad canvas and they're not protagonists in the usual sense of the word. The book isn't about individuals, it's about a pair of phenomena: climate change and what people do about it. The mission to save the future is the protagonist insofar as there is one.

This is the first KSR book I've actually managed to finish! (It's also the only one that I got farther in than about two chapters.) It's a very interesting, enlightening, educational book. I enjoyed reading it.

He's a very particular kind of writer, much more interested in ideas and a very broad scope than in characters or plot. That approach works very well for this book. The first chapter, which details the wet-bulb event, is a stunning, horrifying piece of writing. It's also the closest the book ever comes to feeling like a normal kind of novel. The rest of it is more like a work of popular nonfiction from an alternate timeline, full of science and economics and politics and projects.

I'm pretty sure Robinson researched the absolute cutting edge of every possible action that could possibly mitigate climate change, and wrote the book based on the idea of "What if we tried all of it?"

Very plausibly, not everything works. (In a bit of dark humor, an attempt to explain to billionaires why they should care about other people fails miserably.) Lots of people are either apathetic or actively fighting against the efforts, and there's a whole lot of death, disaster, and irreparable damage along the way. But the project as a whole succeeds, not because of any one action taken by any one group, but because of all of the actions taken by multiple groups. It's a blueprint for what we could be doing, if we were willing to do it.

The Ministry for the Future came out in 2020. Reading it now, its optimism about the idea that people would be willing to pull together for the sake of future generations makes it feel like a relic from an impossibly long time ago.
