rainsometimes: (robin intro)
Going through my tag "my meta" on Tumblr to see if there's stuff I want to repost here. (I haven't done the back-up thing because I'm honestly not sure most of my Tumblr posts are worth saving.)

And I found a post on One Piece about what the Strawhats call each other and how each of them tends to speak in general. This was originally posted to the old One Piece comm on LJ, years ago, and then reposted to Tumblr in a slightly edited form. I didn't want to lose those edits. Since all my old LJ posts are exported here, I could just go back and edit that one, but I was lazy.

At first I was going to back-date it but then figured that maybe someone will see this and add a comment. I don't know Japanese and depend a lot on what others say regarding this content. Plus I haven't paid as much attention to One Piece dialogue in recent years as I once did. So more contributions are very welcome!

I saw a prompt online saying "Write 100 words of huddling for warmth", and while 'pure' 100-word drabbles are hard for me to do, I decided to join in. Not so much as making a real story, just writing 100 words and then stopping.

Then I sent it to [personal profile] tonko, and she replied back with 100 words of huddling for warmth on her own. Mine had been intended as shippy, (Luffy/Usopp), hers was gen, with Zoro and Chopper and also Sanji to the rescue.

I replied with Ace/Smoker, and she with Paulie/Kaya. And by that point I knew I wanted to post them. Tonko gave her permission, so here they are!

Now - I might just write more on this theme and if so I'll post it as a comment. But I'd also like to say that it's utterly cool if anyone else should want to join in with this fun little exercise in the comments!! I only ask you to please use spoiler warnings if you use new characters or events from the current One Piece manga arc. Other canons are welcome too, of course.

I'll repost this Tumblr post I just made in response to an ask I got (I was over a week late in replying, go me.) It turned so long I wanted to put it somewhere else too. Comments as always would be awesome.

I seem to recall you saying things to the effect of Usopp being the emotional core of the crew or being a big part of meeting the emotional needs of the crew (the precise wording escapes me). Do you have any meta on that/have you posted meta on that before? I'd love to have a link to read it!

Sorry for the lateness of my reply, Anon! I wonder if I've ever said that Usopp was the emotional core of the crew - it sounds a bit too definite and exclusive to my ears - but the second wording does sound like something I could have said, yeah. I can't think of any specific meta post I've made to that effect, though. I'll put down some rambling thoughts here instead, but that's all they'll be - obviously terribly subjective, and I'm not going to include any manga pics or the like from canon to make any kind of coherent case.

Many thanks to tresdem and silverwolfcc for listening to me on Plurk about this, helping me sort out my thoughts and contributing! (Everyone should read tresdem's ongoing One Piece meta blog we-are!.)

I posted a rambling Plurk about this yesterday, then thought it would be cool to hear my f-list's thoughts about this, too, should anyone be interested in sharing.

I was having some vague thoughts about common fan speculations about the future of One Piece, and that led to thinking about how Oda tends to write child characters, and that led to more general ponderings about how a "true pirate" should act according to Luffy. (And probably also according to Shanks, Gol D. Roger, Whitebeard and perhaps other non-evil pirates in the story.)

Continued from Chapter 9, part 1. For disclaimer, warning and more info, see that part.

- To be continued in Chapter 10: The Truth

Here's chapter 9 of my ever-so-slow-going-but-certainly-not-abandoned WIP Absence. Assuming my plan holds, there is now only two chapters and a possible epilogue to go.

This is now a divergence AU and has been so since February last year when manga chapter 574 came out. Here, events at Marineford happened differently (for details, see chapter 7, part 1 with spoilers for the real events), which in turn makes this Luffy a somewhat different person than he is in canon now – maybe not quite as mature under the surface (though events at Sabaody were still the same).

Concrit is, as always, very welcome.

Very big thanks go to [personal profile] tonko, who's gone way over and above normal beta duties for this one - besides all her usual tireless edits, she was firm and clear when pointing out where I'd gotten quite a bit off-track for one scene. Then she patiently helped me through my subsequent block and confusion with excellent suggestions that I was happy to pick up and use when rewriting the scene. ♥♥♥

I wrote a fic to [livejournal.com profile] naye, who thought I should re-post it on my journal, so here it is!

Title: Autumn Rain, With Noodles
Characters: Strawhats
Word Count: 1, 036
Spoilers/Setting: Set post-timeskip somewhere in the New World, very liable to be Jossed by canon. (Note particularly that the bit about Nami's weather abilities is complete speculation at this point.)

Chapter 8 of my longest (and slowest, and saddest) fic is finished now. Here's the first part of two.

As noted when chapter 7 was posted, this is now a Divergence AU. Events happened differently at Marineford (for details see chapter 7, part 1, with spoilers for the real Marineford arc).

This chapter has been betaed by [personal profile] tonko, to whom I am very much obliged for her much-needed efforts. Any remaining errors are my responsibility alone. Nitpicks and other forms of concrit are much appreciated! ♥

I believe I'm finally ready to crosspost this fic to [livejournal.com profile] one_piece. While I still haven't ironed out all the wrinkles in the plot yet, now it feels as if the ending is at least in sight, if still a few chapters away. I know... famous last words... *knocks on wood*

So, uh. I haven't actually read the last One Piece chapter yet and to be honest I'm not looking forward to it but spoilers affected me so much I had to do something. A rough sketch was the result. You probably shouldn't click on it unless you know the chapter's content already.

This wouldn't be enough, might not even help much, but it might help a little )

One of those irregular "repost for the sake of nothing better to do completion" sake. ;) First two pieces from [livejournal.com profile] naye's wonderful chaos thread from back in November (still very much recommended for any who might have missed it or had no time back then and might have time now: lots of neat ficcy stuff on it!). The second chaos-piece is rather wangsty, but I'm posting two more ficlets, these from [livejournal.com profile] onepieceyaoi100 and [livejournal.com profile] onepiece_300, hoping they will make up for it. (?)

Concrit and other feedback much appreciated, as always. These are all gen and rated G.

New chapter of "Fine" "Absence". Or newly revised for those who may have seen the first draft on [livejournal.com profile] op_fanforall ages ago. Again, warning for character death and very strong angst.

Edit as of Feb. 2010: Title change.

Title: Absence, Chapter 4
Rating: PG
Pairing: None
Characters: All the Strawhats
Spoilers/setting: I think of this as taking place some time in the future, after the current arc (Impel Down) and other unknown future events.
Genre: Serious angst; deathfic
Summary/what has gone before: This comes from a prompt on [livejournal.com profile] op_fanforall asking for angstfic in which Luffy has to deal with Usopp being dead. He's not dealing with it very well, so far, in fact he's got a selective amnesia, forgetting Usopp ever existed. In the last chapter, the crew, not able to take this anymore, decided to turn the ship around and go back to the island where it happened, without Luffy's knowledge.

Note: As with earlier chapters, this revised version has been extensively betaed by [personal profile] tonko and [livejournal.com profile] wendytigges and is much the better for it. Any remaining errors are solely my own fault. Constructive criticism and other feedback is highly encouraged.

Previous parts: Chapter One, Chapter Two, Chapter Three. See Chapter One for disclaimer.

Night thoughts )

Continues in Chapter Five
rainsometimes: (Default)
I haven't done that much on the still-going-strong [livejournal.com profile] op_fanforall thread: only made five prompts/requests and filled out four requests. Wrong kind of imbalance, I know (hangs head). But most requests seem to ask for smut, which I can't write, and/or interpretations of a character that I don't favour. Or just seem way too hard! ;)

I've already owned up to the Paulie het fic when re-posting it here, and also in a comment to this Usopp/Smoker fic (second part here), sequel beginning here, which may be the crackiest thing I've ever written, unless that honour goes to my Coby-as-Sailor-Chibi-Moon fic.

I've also written a short PG-13 thing with Nervous Usopp/Stoic Zoro. This is less cracky (in my eyes, at least) but fairly humourous -it's also probably the most suggestive thing I've ever posted, but that frankly isn't saying very much. ;)

And then finally I also wrote a four-part fic in answer to the request "Oldest fic plot EVER, I know but... some member(s) of the Mugiwara get de-aged, and the remainder are left to cope. Actually kinda hoping for seriousness along with probably-inevitable wackiness." However, every single installment of that fic was so riddled with typoes, word omissions and other embarrassing errors that I refure to link to it here. Instead I'm going to post a revised version here on LJ. I've taken care (I think) of the most glaring errors, but it's always easy to miss some, so constructive criticism would be extra much appreciated on this one!!

Title: Now We Are Six (Part I)
Rating: Part I and IV are probably PG, for swearing; Part III is PG-13 for more and coarser swearing. Part II is probably G. But except for language, the whole thing is entirely worksafe.
Setting: Vaguely post-TB.
Summary: Strawhats as kids, as requested in the prompt cited above. Initially I’d looked at the prompt and was interested, but felt stomped at trying to figure out the whys of the transformation. Until I came up with the brilliant (?) idea of simply stealing shamelessly from another manga. ^_^
Flavour: This came out as rather plodding, everyday slice-of-life-ish, no great drama or huge insights or awesome comedy. Meat-and-potatoes, style of thing!

Plagiarism ahoy! )
To Be Continued

Er. Um. I have a feeling this is going to come across as somewhat pretentious, but there it is: I’ve written four sonnets about Usopp, Zoro, Sanji and Nami, set before they meet Luffy. Or, well, four sonnetlike poems at least, as the sonnet is a pretty strict form and I’ve taken some liberties with rhyme and metre, as well as simplifying the rhyming scheme. Feedback much appreciated on anything – rhythm, characterisation, word choice and what-have-you.

Title: East Blue Sonnets
Rating: G
Pairing: None
Flavour: Kinda serious
Spoilers: None (edit: well, none past Nami's background in the Arlong Park storyline). Set before everything starts.

Disclaimer: Though unnamed here, they all belong to Eiichiro Oda as part of One Piece, and are used without permission for the purpose of entertainment.

There's a One Piece matter I've been thinking of for awhile now, and that is: who painted the flags and the main sail of the Thousand Sunny?
It can't have been Usopp, 'cause he hadn't rejoined back when Sunny was finished, including flags. And Merry's flag and sail was burned along with her. So, did Franky do it, I wonder? Or one of the Galley-La guys? This puzzles me.

OK, now for some art.
Somewhat OOC: Robin, Zoro, Nami and Chopper play an adventure game )
