This great post on Tumblr by runawaykotaro has a very cool look at Katsura and his underlying motivations, seeing a sense of obligation warring with fatalism. I'm not yet sure if I completely agree on all points, but it's given me plenty to chew on, and it does make a great deal of sense to me on the whole.
