One Piece fan art: backstory what-if
Nov. 3rd, 2010 09:30 pmI drew some pencil sketches of One Piece fan art featuring backstory speculation, going heavily into wishful thinking territory. Very unlikely to actually be proven true.
Don't click if you're not up on the current manga.
The time is ten years ago, eight years before Luffy first sets out. The place is a medium-sized East Blue town with spotty law enforcement, where there's plenty of pirates down by the waterfront.
Here, a young thief ventures on her first raid - with mixed results. She gets the stuff, but her pirate victims discover her, and are now in full pursuit.

But! Note the banana peel, thrown into the air from the side by someone unseen, in order to make her pursuers trip and fall, classic style. I was too lazy to draw the actual pratfall, but just take for granted that it works.
The next thing Nami knows, she's whisked away into an alley by her mysterious rescuer...

...who now has burns on one half of his face and wears a Revolutionary hood in lieu of a hat (though the hat fits him better). More importantly for Nami, he also has some food on hand, as they hide out on a rooftop.

Weapon training, w/pipes.

Window-shopping for two would-be navigators who both like books.
I had no further pic ideas, but tentative head-canon says they hanged out for a day or so until the revolutionaries that Sabo was waiting for turned up (maybe he's doing courier work), and Nami got on a boat in the general direction of home.
I'm imagining that if something like this happened, Nami wouldn't have let down her guard to trust Sabo fully, but on the whole meeting him like this would still be a positive memory for her (for one thing, it would prove she could have a decently friendly interaction with people of helpful disposition without letting slip too much).

Glad you liked it!

Date: 2010-11-07 10:03 pm (UTC)Nami lost Bellemere and was recruited by Arlong when she was ten. She worked for him while also slowly assembling a treasure for eight years. When she was ten, Sabo would have been twelve, if he still lived.

Date: 2010-11-07 10:29 pm (UTC)Thaaanks! I tried to draw Sabo's swing to echo the first time we see Nami using the staff (hitting one of Buggy's men when she was supposed to fire a cannon ball at Luffy).
