Ranma 1/2: One Page Per Volume, Part Six
Dec. 7th, 2018 09:11 pmContinuing the repost series from Tumblr going through Ranma 1/2, one page per volume!
This page has unflipped art to be read from right to left. It's from one of the new omnibus editions from Viz. Sorry about the bad quality in the leftmost part of the picture - these volumes are harder to scan well, since they’re thicker.

Finally, some Ryoga! Volume 6 features the Breaking Point (or Bakusai Tenketsu) arc, among other stories. After training with Cologne and throwing himself onto huge boulders to learn her secret technique, Ryoga's sturdiness is off the chart. But Ranma has for his part worked up a tremendous speed in punching which makes things more equal. Based on this arc particularly, fans often simplified/exaggerated the difference between them to "Ryoga's the strong one and Ranma's the fast one" - but compared to most people in the series, Ranma is actually very, very strong and Ryoga is plenty fast. He's definitely faster than Shampoo and probably Mousse as well.
Anyway! I like the composition in this page, the sense of breathtaking speed and dynamic action. And Takahashi’s beautiful solid blacks! When it comes to hair, her way of drawing black hair with lines of white in it for outline is unusual among mangaka (as
dethorats has pointed out to me). Personally I find it very appealing and an intrinsic part of her style's attractiveness.
