rainsometimesI'm watching the latest episode of the Fruits Basket reboot (season 2, episode 16), and it makes me think of something that will happen later in the manga.
After Kureno, Momiji's curse was the second to break. I think it was on its way to happen anyway - possibly Momiji being able to defy Akito in the beach arc was an early indicator he was close to breaking away - but I think it happened earlier than it otherwise would have done because Tohru was there for him in this scene. Both for telling him about Momo wishing to be closer to Momiji and for crying for him.
...Also, I'd actually forgotten, but the anime reminded me now: right after that, he tells Tohru as she asks about Kureno's whereabouts that "maybe it's just us of the Zodiac who assume he's hard to get to, Akito's told us not to see him so we don't", and proceeds to tell Tohru he will help her see Kureno. This offer is also defying Akito's will, but his cool-headed analysis that lead to it is yet another great sign of his stronger independent nature. (He does back off when Tohru insists she can go alone, but then he gathers his strength and goes over there anyway, waiting around the corner as Tohru and Kureno talk, prompting Kureno to tell Tohru that "someone here is worried about you".)
