Gintama Characters As Flowers, part 12
Jun. 12th, 2024 08:39 pmGintama Flower Suite, part 12: Tsukuyo and iris
There is one type of iris, Iris pseudacora, which is well-known in Sweden under the name "svärdslilja". That literally means 'sword lily'. Having heard that name since I was a kid,
it's given all irises an association with combat and badass fighting in my mind. (It's probably the most well-known type of iris in Sweden.)
At first I wanted to give Tsukuyo that very flower.... but the problem is that it's yellow, and that doesn't suit her too well.
So instead I chose Iris sanguinea, whose colour I think suits her better and which is native to Japan as well.
This is an example of when I didn't care about the official symbolism for the flower, just my own associations.

Date: 2024-06-13 06:37 pm (UTC)Tsukuyo is a prominent Gintama character who doesn't turn up until episode 140 or thereabouts but quickly makes her mark. A woman from the pleasure district Yoshiwara who's been trained by a ninja to lead a troop of guardian women keeping peace in the secluded district, with conflicted loyalties who ultimately follows her conscience and puts her life on the line. She's a great character with a lot of complexities. Though her first arc is unusually serious, later on in the series she gets many funny moments as well, since Gintama is primarily a comedy.
