Fluffy drabble/ficlet

rainsometimesSome Luffy/Usopp fluff, very brief (and tame) stuff. This may be my first attempt at fluff that didn't veer off into angst somewhere on the way. A bit corny maybe.

It was the first night at sea on the new ship and way past midnight. The guys’ cabin on the Thousand Sunny was very dark and filled up with many different types of snoring, as everyone but the lookout had finally fallen asleep.
Though some insisted on waking up, now and then.
“Hey, Usopp?”
“...Mmyeah?”
“You there?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay. Just checking.”
“…Hey, Luffy?”
“Yeah?”
“…This is your hand, isn’t it?”
“Umm…yes?”
A small sigh. ”Luffy, if you’ve got your hand right under my shoulder, then why do you need to ask if I’m here?”
“Heh heh…Just checking.” Luffy’s grin was almost audible in the darkness.
“Yeah, okay.” The warmth of an answering smile you also couldn’t see. “That’s good. I’m just checking, too.”
“Okay.”
Usopp turned in his hammock, shifting position, but didn’t let go of Luffy’s hand. He put it under his cheek like one might do with one’s own hand, trying to sleep.
“Not letting you go,” he murmured very very quietly.
“Huh? Whaddya say?”
“Nothing. G’night, Luffy.”
“G’night, Usopp.”
Luffy rolled over in his hammock too, not trying to pull back his hand. More snoring soon filled up the cabin.
Anchored for the night, the Sunny was rocked gently by the waves, perhaps already dreaming about the adventures it would carry them to. In any case, it was easy to imagine it.
Also, (shifting gears) re-reading the final volumes of Genshiken just now has made me wonder if there are any really good Saki/Madarame fics out there (without having the energy to start looking). Though I also wonder if there even should be fics like that or if that might undermine some central point about the story.

Date: 2008-02-23 11:29 am (UTC)Hmm...well, first of all I have to say that when I first got into OP deep enough to start reading fanfics (which was around May or June last year, I think), I pretty much only favoured Strawhats/adventure and maaybe Usopp/Kaya as the only pairings I favoured. In other words, a canon Nazi. ;) And I was especially hesitant about pairing Luffy with anyone. But...well, Usopp is my favourite character and it's pretty clear that Luffy is the person that matters the most to him, at least on the crew. And there's the Water 7 angst (the Swedish translations reached volume 38 early last summer). So I warmed up to that pairing before I did so with any other OP pairings, which also happened fairly quickly due mostly to reading good fanfics.
(I still don't like Luffy with anyone more than a year older than him, including Zoro (but that one's also for special Zoro-related reasons). Now I could also accept Luffy/Nami as possible, although I don't go looking for it particularly (and I still can't see Luffy in a conventional romantic relationship with anyone - it's not him).)
Later I've also started to notice these little interesting thematic parallels between Luffy and Usopp here and there throughout the manga, from the fact that they're introduced with the same words ("Village Boy") to the Ener/Perona comparison. It makes me wonder, if Blackbeard is meant to be Luffy's dark distorted mirror (and Luffy is Blackbeard's light distorted mirror), then maybe Usopp is meant to be a more benign echo of sorts to Luffy? Or I could just be seeing things, but it's interesting to speculate.

Date: 2008-02-25 03:07 pm (UTC)But while there are similarities between Zoro and Luffy, for instance that both of them have pretty big dreams and they refer to them often; and both of them are motivated by promises they've made out loud directly to another person - they don't seem to be so explicitly thematical as the ones between Luffy and Usopp. And I'm not even talking about the way their personalities are so similar in many respects (dorky, dreaming, fun-loving, adventurous, connect easily with others, tend not to carry grudges, etc): I'm just thinking about these thematical parallels. Although I think I've mentioned the big ones now. Well, the fact that they're the two funniest and most complex characters too maybe, but obviously that's rather subjective.;) Oh, and Oda said in an interview that Luffy's the one he'd most like to be of his characters but Usopp's the one he'd most like for a brother or sister, because he'd "be the most fun to hang around with".
Also, Oda likes meat and fish the most.Those two are singled out I tell you.;)(Though actually I kinda think of Luffy being right between Zoro and Usopp - those two reflect different sides of his personality and understand him very well but in rather different ways. But that's another story...)
