Christmas Fan Art IV: Onsen scene!

This is late! Post-Epiphany, so according to Anglo-Saxon tradition, Christmas is now over. In Swedish tradition Christmas lasts a few more days until January 13, though. Still, I had hoped to finish this earlier. I had a cold, let's blame that. ;)

For dethorats, who wanted either a Ranma 1/2 pic or something with Zoro, Usopp and Luffy "with bonus points for crack and Chopper or something REALLY early, like maybe even pre-Sanji".

I had several ideas in mind, but eventually settled for that old manga favourite, the hot spring outdoor bath, and included Chopper as well.

I wanted to make this post-timeskip at first, for aesthetic reasons all right, all right, I was thinking of Usopp's muscles but in the end didn't do so because I don't think we've seen Zoro's chest yet - I don't know if the old big scar has faded or if he's collected a bunch of new ones.

Unclad boys behind the cut, but nothing more than what you can see in the manga itself.




Usopp is half a second away from yelling to Zoro not to be such a dumbass and will he just get into the water, for crying out loud - right now he's momentarily stunned by Zoro's insanity. Though if you want Zoro/Usopp subtext, he may also be just a little distracted.


I suspect details may not be all that clear, but the stuff in the background are supposed to be yukata etc that Luffy, Usopp and Chopper wore on the way down to the spring from the undepicted (but very close) bath-house.

I love how there's always a story in your pictures! Hee, Zoro deserves to be yelled at. XD

Luffy playing around with the buckets is very cute, and I giggled when I realized he's wearing a life-saver in an onsen. Not deep enough for that to be of any use, if it's anything like a typical onsen. XD (Though it might help for Chopper? And it's absolutely like Luffy to wear it out of principle.)

Eh heh heh, well, I've never actually been in an onsen, only seen it in manga and anime. It's true that it never seems to be very deep... but I guess my reflective protectiveness over our Devil Fruit users kicked in, there. Umm... maybe the lifesaver helps making Luffy feel more cheerful despite the water weakening him? Or... let's say we can blame Usopp. He's probably never been in an onsen either, and when they grabbed a lifesaver for Chopper he insisted on Luffy having one as well, so he wouldn't have to look out for him but could sit back and relax.

(The buckets were copied down from Ranma 1/2, where they all look like that.)

It's wasn't criticism - I thought it was funny! ^_^ Luffy is the guy who wears shorts and sandals in the snow country because it's his policy (...okay, he totally got the sandals from Shanks!), so if he decided that a lifesaver was the thing for bathing, he'd use it.

As for the buckets, they look very traditional. All the places I've been to has had plastic ones, but that wouldn't look as good in the One Piece world!

I love how you draw Chopper! It's not too cutesy and works really well in your own style! Also, this picture is awesome and clearly involved a lot of work and so I must say THANK YOU TIMES A BILLION and prostrate myself before you for not commenting in a timely manner and taking so damn long to get your ficlet back to you.

The coloring on this is perfectly subdued and I really like the snow on the trees effect, as well as the pile of clothes. Also Zoro is dorktastic as usual and Usopp is right to be all "Oi, what the heck is WRONG with you?" while also being a little 'hello, mostly-naked-in-the-cold-Zoro,' at least in my imagination.

Also, Zoro's chest scar is definitely visible in recent colorspreads, just as an FYI.

Ah, I'm very glad you liked it! :DD It did take some time to draw with my limited skills - beefcake is nice to look at but hard for me to get right (I was helped by this new find of a webcomic (http://tjandamal.com/) as well as canon); and Zoro still looks a bit too stocky and his left leg is just no good. *shudder* Still, long as it doesn't spoil it too much!

I didn't realise when posting that the words in Zoro's speech balloon would look so darn small! (If you couldn't quite make it out, he's supposed to be saying "Eh... Too bad they don't have any icy cold rivers around here...")

Good, I definitely wanted to include a possibility of that. ^_^(But not making it too blatant when Chopper is there as well.)

So I could have made it post-skip after all! Oh, well. Next time around!
