Now that I've gone out and bought the first Funimation DVD box, I've been able to see the start of One Piece in animation for the first time. Rather interesting to see the differences from the manga - I'd heard about the anime being a good deal less faithful at the start, and it seems true enough. I've noted, for instance, that in the anime Luffy knows Usopp's name from when he was a kid, rather than just knowing his existence as Yasopp's son. (Useless trivia: This would make anime Usopp the third crewmate that Luffy knew the name of before he first met them; the two from canon are Zoro and Franky.)
Also, I see that in the anime, both Nami and Zoro know about Yasopp. Huh.
This also means that the anime Zoro knows about Luffy's connection with Shanks from early on, which isn't the case in the manga.
...Come to think of it, does Zoro even know about Shanks now? He wasn't there back in 431 when Garp and Luffy had their little conversation, IIRC. One would assume that the others told him about it later, but I can't recall seeing that - and the strawhats seem to be rather bad about telling each other stuff off-camera.
I can't think of any time when Shanks has even been mentioned while Zoro is both present and awake. Hm.
