Now that I've gone out and bought the first Funimation DVD box, I've been able to see the start of One Piece in animation for the first time. Rather interesting to see the differences from the manga - I'd heard about the anime being a good deal less faithful at the start, and it seems true enough. I've noted, for instance, that in the anime Luffy knows Usopp's name from when he was a kid, rather than just knowing his existence as Yasopp's son. (Useless trivia: This would make anime Usopp the third crewmate that Luffy knew the name of before he first met them; the two from canon are Zoro and Franky.)
Also, I see that in the anime, both Nami and Zoro know about Yasopp. Huh.
This also means that the anime Zoro knows about Luffy's connection with Shanks from early on, which isn't the case in the manga.
...Come to think of it, does Zoro even know about Shanks now? He wasn't there back in 431 when Garp and Luffy had their little conversation, IIRC. One would assume that the others told him about it later, but I can't recall seeing that - and the strawhats seem to be rather bad about telling each other stuff off-camera.
I can't think of any time when Shanks has even been mentioned while Zoro is both present and awake. Hm.

Date: 2008-05-28 06:21 pm (UTC)Lots of stuff like that. I kinda hate watching the anime because of stuff like that hahah I'm such a puritan. But I also don't like the anime so much because
1) cheap animation
2) crappy filler (do not buy the Apis arc)
3) did I mention crappy filler?
4) the animation team seems to like to throw out random ZoSan too because they ~know~ what gets the girls going >:( Dicks.
Though I shouldn't really complain, watching the anime up to the Usopp arc is what got me interested in One Piece enough to learn IRC and such programs to catch up with the manga.

Date: 2008-05-29 03:01 pm (UTC)I do like some of the additions even on these first episodes. For instance, I don't mind Nami raiding Alvida's ship in the first episode (I guess that would be the Nami fangirl in me coming through ;). And I rather liked the scene right after Kaya refuses to believe Usopp's warning and he's walking away kinda stunned, with a little flashback, and trying to force himself to smile but not succeeding. I thought that was pretty good.
On the other hand I don't get why they changed Usopp's first meeting with Luffy, Nami and Zoro so much, adding tension and making Luffy realise he's Yasopp's son rigth away. It's like the animators don't believe these people could be friendly to one another without hearing about Yasopp. :(

Date: 2008-05-29 05:44 pm (UTC)The Skypiea moment sounds good. ^_^ Another anime thing I liked muchly: in episode 309, Usopp is taunting Lucci just like in the manga, calling him "CP9 boss cat!" which of course is awesome in itself, but then in the anime he goes on to add "you worthless kitten!" and sort of leans forward into the lens. I loved that, and think there should be an icon made from it. ;)
But the manga is so much the thing for me that it's not even a question of preferring it. It's just IT. That's One Piece for me. The anime is just an adaptation. Sometimes good, sometimes not so good. But even when it's good it's just a bonus, in my eyes. ;)
Movie 6 style? That was seriously cool watching something rather different in what i thought was a very cool movie in itself. But I don't know if I'd like a whole series in that style, honestly...Though I don't think I'd turn away from it, either, as long as the writing, direction and voice acting is decent.
