rainsometimes: (paako zurako)
This is a list of manga that aren't actually from this decade at all! They were originally both started and finished before 2010.

...However, largely due to lags in translation but in some cases more because I was slow to discover them, I still happened to read them (or at least part of them) during this decade. So they were part of my own personal manga-reading decade!

It was hard to rank them internally. I'm relatively sure of the top 1-3 spots, but the rest could easily be placed differently, and the "honourable mentions" were close to the list, too.

Honourably mentions that nearly made it on:
Otherworld Barbara, Mokke, Onwards Towards Our Noble Deaths, and Cross Game

10. A Drifting Life & NonNonBa (I couldn't leave either out...)
9. Gabai - Saga no Gabai Bâ-chan ("Une sacrée mamie" in French)
8. Eyeshield 21
7. In This Corner Of The World
6. Claymore
5. Showa
4. Nodame Cantabile
3. 20th Century Boys
2. Iguana Girl (the only short story on this list and all other end-of-decade lists: normally I don't list something this short, but this story is just SO GOOD)
1. The Heart of Thomas
rainsometimes: Tohru, Kyo and Yuki from Fruits Basket, Yuki and Kyo in animal form (FB Trio)
These are the manga I've read and liked/enjoyed/loved/laughed at/etc that started this decade and are still ongoing.

Nearly made it: Delicious in Dungeon, Wotakoi

10. My Neighbour Seki
9. Atom the Beginning
8. Cells at Work
7. The Ancient Magus Bride
6. Fushigi no Kuni no Bird (in French: "Isabella Bird")
5. Silver Spoon
4. Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun
3. Golden Kamuy
2. Noragami
1. A Bride's Story
rainsometimes: (Ukyo badass)
This list is for manga I've liked/enjoyed/loved/been impressed by that started before 2010 and are still ongoing.

They're judged in their entirety, that is to say including all the volumes/chapters that came out before 2010. That's why One Piece is so high up even though that title has sunk a lot in my esteem during the course of this decade. (That being said, I can't say that my disappointment doesn't matter, either: for as much as I deeply love much of pre-timeskip One Piece, when considering the title as a whole right now it's relevant to also think of the post-timeskip state. That's why it doesn't claim the top spot or the runner-up spot.)

A lot of the list is very much comparing apples to oranges in content, genre, scope, and tone, so I'm not all that sure of my ranking choices. (Also, maybe Ooku has already ended in Japan? But it hasn't ended for me, so it gets on the list.)

Vagabond very likely belongs on this kind of list, but I have only read a few volumes of it - not enough to list it.

EDIT: How could I forget March Comes In Like A Lion? Okay, this one belongs at #1, so the rest are bumped down, and Ooku is no longer on the list but a Honourable Mention.

10. Natsume's Book of Friends
9. REAL
8. Yotsuba&
7. What Did You Eat Yesterday?
6. Saint Young Men
5. Yona of the Dawn
4. One Piece
3. Skip Beat!
2. Vinland Saga
1. March Comes In Like A Lion
rainsometimes: (odd jobs bench)
This is a list of the top ten completed manga that I've read and enjoyed which started before 2010 and ended at some point in the period between 2010 and 2019.

The top spot was REALLY HARD. My heart in its current state said one thing, but my critical judgment (and memory of my heart in 2010) said another. So... Yeah, I couldn't, I just couldn't put either one in #2. They had to share the spot in the end.

The works are judged in their entirety, including all the chapters and volumes that came out before 2010.

I'm sorry in advance for the gems I might have forgotten.

Wandering Son didn't make it here because I haven't gotten to read the ending yet.

I've used English titles for the sake of communication when those exist, even when I've read the work in French. One work I've only read in Swedish, Hoshigahara Aomanjû no mori, translated as "Aomanjuskogen" ('Aomanju Forest').

It wasn't just the top spot that was tough - a number of great works here, and I could very easily have placed them a bit differently. How do you compare a work like "Billy Bat" to one like "Barakamon"? I found the ending to Billy Bat unsatisfying, but it had many amazing scenes in its run, and is very ambitious - however, it's the kind of work that does need a good ending to feel like a coherent whole, as it's extremely plot-oriented and very explicitly "forward-looking" in its narrative. Meanwhile, Barakamon has a much smaller scope and down-to-earth ambitions, but after a slightly plodding start it goes on to be consistently solid.

And maybe both "Kimi ni Todoke" and "Blade of the Immortal" were stronger in their first half than in the second one, but their strengths and tones are extremely different from each other.

I did a lot of mental coin-flipping...

But this is my list for now!

10. Sweet Blue Flowers (Aoi Hana)
9. Princess Jellyfish
8. Hoshigahara Aomanjû no mori
7. Billy Bat
6. Barakamon
5. Kekkaishi
4. Kimi ni Todoke
3. Blade of the Immortal

I've been looking at manga that I have read and liked/enjoyed/loved/were awestruck by which both started in the period 2010-2019 and finished then, plus are ones where I personally have been able to read them to the end. There weren't actually all that many!

Disclaimer that I have a bad memory and may very well be forgetting several gems I ought to include. And obviously there are great many titles out there that I haven't read.
Still, here's my top ten list of mangas that fit the above criteria!

Honourable Mention: "Les Miserables", manga adaptation of the classic novel by Hirohiko Arai. One of the best adaptations of a novel into comics that I've read, and all the more impressive for adapting such a huge, wordy novel. But it's hard to compare adaptations to original works.

The competition between #2 and #3 was strong and could well have gone the other way, but I didn't hesitate when it came to the top spot.

10. My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness
9. That Blue Sky Feeling
8. Orange
7. Limit
6. Complex Age
5. My Love Story!!
4. My Brother's Husband
3. Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju
2. Our Dreams At Dusk
1. Sunny
